Over 100 Require Assistance Following North Shore Flooding

BOSTON (CBS) -- Heavy rain brought flooding to several cities and towns in Massachusetts on Sunday.

Drivers on Storrow Drive in Boston Sunday morning were met by heavy rain and a flooded roadway. A flash flood warning was also issued for Essex and Middlesex counties, expiring in the afternoon.

Over seven inches of rain fell in Lynn, according to the National Weather Service. Lynn Fire Department warned that Boston Street and Cottage Street were flooded.

The department also said that Lynn Fire and Police responded to over 100 911 calls before 12:30 p.m. alone. One man navigated the flooded streets of Lynn using an air mattress, though firefighters said the roads should be avoided "no matter what mode of transportation you have."

Firefighters said Sunday night that streets in Lynn that are prone to flooding in large storms are still impassable, most located in West Lynn.

"The most immediate danger has been people trapped in cars," said Lynn Fire Lt. Paul Ricci.

Phillip Hunt runs a store in Lynn. His basement was so flooded, that waters reached the top of his stairs.

"The damage has just been extravagant," he said.

Mass. State Police said Storrow Drive was detoured at Boylston Street in Boston. A viewer video shows at least one car was stalled by the high waters.

Memorial Drive in Cambridge was detoured at Main Street, State Police tweeted.

According to the MBTA, a Green Line T trolley was derailed near the Back of the Hill stop around 7 a.m. Sunday. The trolley, which was going less than 10 mph, hit debris during a downpour. No passengers were on board and the conductor was not injured.
