Suspect In Esplanade Attack 'Similar' To Man In May Incident, Police Say

BOSTON (CBS) - State police are looking for a man they say attacked a woman on the Esplanade early Friday morning.

Investigators told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens the man was on a mountain bike when he grabbed a woman from behind, around the waist in the area of the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge just before 12:30 a.m.

She ran off, tracked down another cyclist who then called 911.  The woman, who is 22 years old, was not seriously hurt.  The suspect rode off on the bike.

The woman described him as Latino, in his mid-20s to early 30s, about 5-feet 6-inches tall with a moustache and short, dark hair.

"Based on this description, investigators do not currently believe this suspect to be responsible for a series of unsolved sexual assaults in the same area during the summers of 2007 and 2009," the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said in a statement.

"The assailant's description is generally similar to that of a man who pushed a woman to the ground in the area of the lagoon and then fled on foot at about 2:50 a.m. on May 24. Whether a connection exists between these two incidents remains under investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at 617-727-6780.
