State Eyes Private Toll Bridge To Cape Cod As Alternative To Bourne And Sagamore
BOSTON (CBS) -- Getting to and from the Cape in the summer can be a frustrating experience while you're sitting in traffic waiting to cross the Bourne Bridge or the Sagamore Bridge.
Now the state is considering an idea for adding a third bridge alongside the Sagamore that would funnel traffic away from Route 28 and Route 6.
"We feel that in the scale, the span of the bridge, the width of the bridge, it's certainly technically feasible to build a bridge," MassDOT Highway chief Frank DePaola told WBZ-TV'S Bill Shields.
This new bridge would be built without state money.
A private company would put up the new bridge and operate it for 30 years.
But there's a catch.
To use this new bridge you would have to pay a toll.
Would drivers shell out the cash to take the new bridge and beat the traffic?
That remains to be seen.
But one Cape area legislator thinks adding a third bridge is worth considering,
"Everyone knows the bridge in the summertime is an absolute disaster," said Rep. Vinny DeMacedo, (R-Plymouth). "It gets backed up and so the fact that people are looking at it is not a bad thing."
