Man Stabbed, Robbed While Walking Dog In Brookline

BROOKLINE (CBS) – Police in Brookline are hoping surveillance video leads them to a suspect they say violently attacked a man walking his dog. The victim remains hospitalized with a punctured lung.

Just before 10 p.m. Wednesday night on Vernon Street, police say a 50-year-old man was out walking his dog.

Surveillance video shows the man walking when the suspect approaches from behind and attacks.

"This is a pretty vicious crime," said Brookline Police Deputy Superintendent Michael Gropman. "Unprovoked, never said a word."

Police say the two struggled until the suspect stabbed his victim three times in the side, puncturing his lung.

The only item taken - a cell phone.

"When he realized it wasn't what he wanted, he discarded it within 25 seconds, I believe," Deputy Superintendent Michael Gropman said. "Someone is almost dead over literally nothing."

Within seconds, several witnesses were by the victim's side calling for help.

"I've never felt unsafe in this neighborhood whatsoever," resident Ed Blanchette said. "It just goes to show you, no matter where you live today, you've got to be very, very careful."

The suspect is described as a black male in his mid 20's. He was clean shaven and wearing a puffy coat.
