Souza On Adam Jones Show: Backup Plan For Celtics If 'Lovefest' Falls Through?

BOSTON (CBS) --  The Boston Celtics are looking to make some fireworks this offseason, but they may never really get a chance to light the fuse.

Scott Souza from MetroWest Daily News joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's The Adam Jones Show on Tuesday night to talk about the Celtics' offseason, and says after Kevin Love, who would be a quick-fix option for Boston, there may not be much for Danny Ainge to work with.

"You look around the NBA and you're not in a situation like 2007 where a Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are available," said Souza. "In terms of big names being available that can turn your franchise around, Kevin Love is really just the one name you've heard. LaMarcus Aldrige was the guy people talked about last year, but Portland took a big step forward. Dwight Howard was a big name last year but is not available. Roy Hibbert is losing value by the second each playoff game he goes through without scoring a point.

Kevin Love Watch: All The Latest Rumors

"If you're a team looking to make a big splash, fireworks if you will, Kevin Love is the guy," he said.

Souza said when C's owner Wyc Grousbeck make his famous "fireworks" line earlier this season, the intention was for Boston to make those fireworks by adding another All Star-caliber player to Rajon Rondo. But if Love goes elsewhere, they may be forced to move Rondo to gather more assets for the future, and go through another rebuilding season in 2014-15.

"To me, you go into this summer with two options," said Souza. "It doesn't make sense to add that sixth pick to this team, bring back Rondo going into the final year of his contract and a bunch of vets who are OK."

Souza said that plan worked out last year in Brad Stevens' first year on the bench, but it wouldn't be worth it for another year.

"You either make the big deal, or you look at the flip side and say OK, maybe Rondo is that number-two guy that is available this year," he said. "Then you go young and at least have the idea that you're building long-term and not just treading water for another lottery."
