Student Brings Loaded Gun To NH Middle School

SOMERSWORTH, NH (CBS) – An 11-year-old student allegedly brought a loaded handgun to Somersworth Middle School on Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to the school at 11:15 a.m. and the gun was secured. The school resource officer also assisted in the investigation.

"It's alarming to think what could have happened," said Somersworth Police Captain Tim McLin.

Captain McLin said other students did see the gun, but investigators do not believe the student had sinister intentions.

"It wasn't brandished in a way to threaten anyone," Captain McLin said. "We don't believe in the investigation that it was intended for that."

Some parents told WBZ they received a recorded call from the principal hours after the investigation began.

"I didn't get a call until three o'clock. Until after school was over," parent Angela Phillips said. "They didn't say whether it was a knife or gun. They didn't say what kind of weapon it was."

Others found out on social media, or from their own kids.

Police are investigating how the student got the gun. Captain McLin said any legal action would happen in family court, and their goal is to get services for that student.
