Flooding risk continues in southern New England Tuesday

Next Weather: WBZ Mid-Morning Forecast For September 6

BOSTON – We've been asking and asking… but this spell is excessive!

No doubt Monday and Tuesday's rain will put a good dent in the deficit and drought in Massachusetts. However, more concerns arise as we start the school year.

Lately the phrase "extreme drought" has been a household term. As of last week's update, 38% of the state was still in that category. Monday's rain changed all of that. Areas north of Boston recorded 2-4 inches in a quick burst before 9 a.m.

The steady pockets continued and many other locations began to tally up to similar numbers. Tuesday morning helped as well but the drought monitor will cap off this week's total officially at 8:30am.

Rain will carry southern New England through the rest of the day on Tuesday. While no severe weather will be associated with this event, flash flooding will still be a concern. Since the ground has been so dry, runoff will be the likely cause of flooding in the region.

Low lying areas, poor drainage spots, and basements can all provide a space for this water to gather. Make sure to check your sump pump and if you do need to travel today, avoid any high water! We always remind folks to "turn around, don't drown." It's especially true in a scenario like this.

The rain will taper off by sunset (7:10 p.m). Clouds will remain with a few showers overnight and there may still be some residual delays due to flooded roads and large puddles Wednesday morning.

By Wednesday afternoon, the clouds will begin to disperse and we'll be back under blue sky Thursday and Friday. Another great weekend to look forward to!
