Will a weekend snowstorm hit Massachusetts? Here's the latest forecast track.
BOSTON - You may have heard a rumor about a potential snowstorm in the pipeline for Massachusetts and New England. Here's the latest forecast from the WBZ NEXT weather team.
Weekend storm update
We are now about 4 days away from the storm's closest pass by New England. It's still a bit too early to "lock in" a solution or to give much fine detail, but our confidence has increased.
Much like Monday, most models have the storm traveling from Texas, through the southeast, and then out to sea, well south of New England this coming weekend.
This will be a highly impactful winter storm for parts of the south, including Dallas. Several inches of snow are forecast to fall in areas that are not all that used to plowing and snow removal.
Latest storm track
As the storm hits the coastline later this week, most of our model guidance is now forecasting the center of the storm to pass well south of New England and also well south of the "benchmark" location. This is located at 40N 70W, and typically, to get a decent snowfall in New England, the storm's center must pass near or inside of this area.
As previously stated, it is still a bit too early to finalize our storm track forecast.
The chances of a classic and highly impactful New England storm are waning (but not yet zero).
The "smart money" now would be on either a complete miss or some sort of fringing or grazing with some light snow from the northern edge of the storm.
We will continue to pour over the data and will likely have much more detail and confidence in the next 24 hours.
Boston snow
To this point, there has been no snow in Boston or Worcester yet this month. Boston is a little more than 6" below the average snowfall to date this season and Worcester is more than 10" below.
Monday marks the 1,046th consecutive day without a 6"+ snowfall in the city of Boston. To say it's been a while would be an understatement.
