Image Of Gun On Snapchat Prompts Lockdown At High School

FALL RIVER (CBS) - A Snapchat photo prompted a lockdown at Durfee High School on Monday. A student is under arrest for allegedly posting the picture of a gun with the words "Life at Durfee".

The image included a logo of the school which would only appear if it was taken in the building or nearby.

The image was brought to the attention of administrators by several students. Fall River Police were called and officers learned the identity of a 15-year-old student and attempted to locate him.

During the investigation, students and faculty were not allowed to leave classrooms while police searched for the suspect.

Officers learned the student had left the building and he was later located at the Pleasant View Housing Development. Officers found a BB handgun in the student's backpack.

The juvenile is facing four charges including possessing a dangerous weapon on school grounds, minor in possession of a BB gun, disturbing the peace while armed and disturbing a school assembly.

In a statement, the Fall River Public Schools superintendent thanked the courageous students who came forward. "As a school community, we are so much better than the unsafe behavior demonstrated by some students," said Superintendent Matthew Malone. "We look forward to a safe return to our routine tomorrow."

On Tuesday, only the main entrance will be open for students and teachers. Metal detectors and wands will be used on their way in.
