Shaughnessy: Tomato Cans Leading Patriots Right To Arizona, 'The AFC Sucks'

BOSTON (CBS) - The New England Patriots clinched the no. 1 overall seed and homefield advantage throughout the postseason simply by watching television last night.

The Bengals beat the Broncos at home, and in the process the Patriots ensured that the road to the Super Bowl must first go through Foxboro and Gillette Stadium.

The stars are aligning for the Patriots to make another run at their fourth Lombardi come February, but for the Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy, something else is aligning: tomato cans -- that is, the weak competition in the NFL's American Football Conference.

98.5 The Sports Hub's Andy Gresh and Mike Flynn were joined in studio by Shaughnessy on Tuesday. The conversation started with the Patriots, and what Shaughnessy believes is an easy path to the Super Bowl.

"The walls of the tomato cans are leading you right to Glendale, Arizona. The conference sucks. Every. Team. In. The. Conference. Sucks...except the Patriots. They're all beatable. No team can come in here and beat the Patriots in Gillette. This is not like those other years: the Jets did it, the Ravens did it, you had doubts here and there, but you can't make a case [for any AFC team]. They've already humiliated and beaten all these bums, and now they're lined up right in front of them."

We've heard this commentary from Shaughnessy before, but his rant on Tuesday was particularly entertaining.
