Sean Gentille With Adam Jones: Chiarelli Not Looking For Rentals At Trade Deadline
BOSTON (CBS) - The NHL trade deadline is nearing and so far it's been very quiet on the Bruins front.
Sean Gentille from The Sporting News joined Adam Jones Monday night to discuss the options for the B's.
Unfortunately the options may be a bit limited based on the climate around the league and the unwillingness of teams to offer up quality players - especially those under contract past this summer.
"Given the choice, whether it's Peter Chiarelli or Ray Shero (Penguins GM), you'd like to acquire a guy with term left on his deal. But the fact of the matter is those aren't the guys that typically, impact-wise at least, hit the trading block. I think in a perfect world they'd go after somebody with term, but that's easier said than done given the kind of prices that are out there."
General manager Peter Chiarelli has been with the Bruins since May 2006, and in looking at his trade history at or near the deadline, only four players (Mark Recchi, Dennis Seidenberg, Chris Kelly and Rich Peverley) remained with the team beyond the trade year.
His six most recent deadline acquisitions (Tomas Kaberle, Brian Rolston, Mike Mottau, Greg Zanon, Jaromir Jagr and Wade Redden) were NOT back with the team following their trade year.
Whether a trend in the league, or Chiarelli's inability to resign, the most recent trade deadline acquisitions for the Bruins have all been rentals - something Gentille said Chiarelli is not looking for come Wednesday afternoon.
Good news though: Gentille also told Jones it's the Penguins, not the Bruins, that need to make a deal the most to get back to the Stanley Cup Finals.
"They have a lot of holes and they're a top heavy team now more than they've ever been in the past," said Gentille of the Pens. "I think they're still not the same team without Jordan Staal there. They're not a particularly deep team and they need to find a way to adjust that."
