Professor Stabbed At Salem State University

SALEM (CBS) – Crime scene tape surrounded an academic building at Salem State University as police searched for clues and evidence late into the night after a professor was stabbed in the neck on Wednesday.

Student Steven Jack says, "Anything horrible like this is hard to believe. Kind of eye opening."

It happened in Meier Hall at about 5:15 p.m. The school says the attacker stabbed the faculty member near the bathroom, the injuries are not life threatening, but the attacker ran and was caught a block away.

"It was unnerving at first cause you don't expect that at your school," another student said.

Students saw the commotion and aftermath and couldn't believe it.

But for sophomore Steven Jack, who was in class right upstairs during the attack, he had no idea what was unfolding near him. "It's kind of surreal," he said.

In fact, he says the school waited over an hour to send out an alert. He wonders what took so long.

"I know the suspect was apprehended, I'd like to know a violent crime happened very close to us while in class and no notice a little scary yeah," he said.

The professor is in stable condition. The name of the suspect has not been released.

The university says there is no threat to the public and classes were taking place Wednesday night.
