Large Swordfish Washes Up On Beach In Rye, NH
RYE, New Hampshire (CBS) -- Marine biologists are facing a mystery as they try to figure out what caused a large swordfish, which usually inhabits deeper waters, to wash up on the beach in Rye, New Hampshire Tuesday.
Rye Police got a report about the swordfish on the beach Tuesday afternoon--and though it wasn't a mammal, they asked New Hampshire Marine Mammal Rescue for some help.
The group, based at Rye's Seacoast Science Center, responds to animals that get stranded on New Hampshire's beaches and coastline.
Marine Mammal Rescue found that the swordfish was dead, and carted it off the beach with the help of Rye Police and beachgoers.
They took it back to their center for a necropsy to see if they could determine what killed it. They said it had no signs of having been hooked.
