Driver Says Log Thrown At Tractor-Trailer Caused Route 3 Crash In Tyngsboro
TYNGSBORO (CBS) – A tractor-trailer crashed on Route 3 early Wednesday morning and the driver says it's because someone threw a log at his truck.
The Federal Express delivery truck was turning off the southbound lanes in Tyngsboro at exit 34 when it swerved to avoid the log and rolled over around 1 a.m.
"The operator told responding troopers that he observed a person come from the wood line at the same moment the object was apparently thrown. Troopers recovered a tree log from the right lane of the roadway. The investigation is ongoing to determine if that was the object thrown at the truck," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.
Another driver told State Police someone also threw an object at their vehicle in the same area just before the truck crash. Neither driver was hurt.
Troopers went into the woods and a K9 track led them to a home on Cannongate Road, but there are no arrests or charges at this point in the investigation.
Procopio said there was a similar incident on Route 3 south in Chelmsford on June 22. A driver of a Honda Civic told investigators a rock hit her windshield, causing her to lose control of the car. She hit a pole and drove into a ditch, but was not seriously hurt.
"The driver said she believes the rock was thrown from the woods to the right side of the road," Procopio said in an email to WBZ-TV. "(A) search of the area and interviews of nearby residents turned up no suspects."
That incident was just south of Wednesday's crash, about two exits away, according to police. They are working to see if there is any connection.
