RI Police Fundraising For Family Who Lost Home In Fire On Christmas

CRANSTON, R.I. (CBS) -- A Rhode Island police department is fundraising for a family who lost their Cranston home in an early-morning fire on Christmas.

The fire broke out at the house on Standish Avenue shortly after 1:30 a.m. Police officers found the house filled with smoke and flames on the first floor, according to the Cranston Police Department Facebook page.

Twitter user @ChrisPalmer1216 captured video of the blaze.

A resident suffered serious cuts to his arms after jumping out of a window on the first floor, police say. Officers treated the man at the scene.

Four police officers entered the home and helped save the lives of several people and cats inside the multi-family house by alerting them as to what was happening. They also helped people evacuate a nearby home.

No officers were hurt, police say.

The department has set up a GoFundMe page in an effort to help the family. As of late Friday night, 15 donations totaling more than $500 had been raised. Police hope to raise at least $2,000.
