Newly-Elected Lawmaker Wants Probe Of 38 Studios Deal
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A newly-elected Rhode Island lawmaker is calling for an independent investigation into the state's involvement in former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's failed video game company.
The state in 2010 invested $75 million in 38 Studios to lure it from Massachusetts. Two years later, the company ran out of money and went bankrupt.
Lincoln Republican John Lyle Jr. said in a statement "The time has come to make those who were responsible for this unfortunate situation culpable, so this won't happen again."
He says the 38 Studios "boondoggle" resulted directly in the imminent departure of the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox baseball team.
He wants incoming Attorney General Peter Neronha to open a commission to investigate the deal, saying current Attorney General Peter Kilmartin didn't investigate 38 Studios properly.
