Rex Ryan Believes LeBron James Would Excel In NFL, Is Wrong

By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- Bills head coach Rex Ryan has joined a growing chorus of people who incorrectly believe LeBron James would make a fine professional football player.

For whatever reason, Rex made a recruiting pitch for the NBA's biggest star after practice on Wednesday.

"I don't know a whole lot about [basketball], but that big ol' rascal can come play tight end for us, if he wants to."Ryan said, per Mike Rodak of ESPN.

The coach was asked to elaborate on what would make LeBron successful in the NFL.

"I think it would work out well. You look at him, he's physical. Unbelievable," Ryan said. "Look at the range. There's nobody that can cover him. There's no way you can cover him. Fast, physical. We'll give it a shot."

Ryan is just the latest person to incorrectly profess LeBron's expected dominance on the football field. Just last week, the NFL Network wondered aloud whether LeBron might be more dominant than Rob Gronkowski.

Yes, the idea of a 6-foot-8 monster of a man running routes and running through humans is one that turns some folks' eyes into spinning stars. I mean, he looks like he could take Cam Newton, doesn't he?

And yes, LeBron found success as a high school football player for two years.

But looks can be deceiving, and people often overlook the most crucial element when discussing the fantasy world where LeBron is dragging bodies around a football field en route to the end zone.

LeBron James chose to pursue the sport where even gentle touching is not allowed. He chose that path for a number of reasons, with the potential for great monetary gain likely being No. 1 and his overwhelming otherworldly talent being 1A.

But he also chose it because he doesn't like getting hit.

In fact, he hates it.

LeBron James chose this career path. It's suiting him well.

Stop saying LeBron James would be a great football player. He would not. It would force him to overcome adversity all day, every day. He would last five plays. He would hate it.

Stop it.
