Revolution Pursuing Midfielder Jermaine Jones

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Revolution are on their bye week, but could be making a major move on the field.

The Revolution are reportedly one of the clubs looking to sign 32-year-old midfielder Jermaine Jones, who is free to sign with any team. New England confirmed their interest in Jones over the weekend.

"We've received approval from our ownership to pursue Jermaine," Revolution general manager Michael Burns told FOXSoccer.com. "We're interested in Jermaine and we've been in contact with MLS."

Jones, who scored a beautiful goal for the U.S. Men's National Team in their 2-2 draw against Portugal during group play of the World Cup in Brazil, is available on a free transfer and has expressed a desire to play in MLS this season.

A 15-year professional, Jones has spent most of his career in Germany's Bundesliga, playing for  Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen and, most recently, Schalke 04. He's made 46 appearances with the U.S. national team since 2010, scoring three goals.

Jones will reportedly seek an annual salary of $3-6 million in MLS, which would make him the high-paid player in Revolution history should he land in New England.

The Revs, who have lost nine of their last 10 matches, could use the midfielder after losing Andy Dorman to an MCL injury last month. Dorman is expected to be sidelined until September.

The Chicago Fire have also shown interest in adding Jones. Any MLS team hoping to sign Jones would have to get a deal done before rosters freeze on September 15.
