Stephen Drew Traded To Yankees

BOSTON (CBS) -- As if it wasn't already a crazy deadline day in Boston, the Red Sox and Yankees have put their bitter rivalry aside and agreed to a trade.

Stephen Drew has been traded to the Yankees.

The Red Sox will receive Kelly Johnson in return.

CSNNE's Sean McAdam reported that the Yankees will take on "almost all" of the money remaining on Drew's contract.

Drew, 31, has only played shortstop in his big-league career, a position quite famously occupied at the moment by Derek Jeter. Drew is hitting .176 in 39 games this season.

Johnson, 32, served as a utility player for the Yankees this season. He's hitting .219 with six home runs and a .677 OPS. In his nine-year career with Atlanta, Arizona, Toronto, Tampa Bay and New York, he is a .251 hitter.

The two teams haven't traded with each other since 1997, when Mike Stanley went to New York.

The trade adds another event to what's been an up-and-down 2014 for Drew. He rejected the Red Sox' qualifying offer after winning the World Series last season, but he was unable to find a suitor for his services over the winter. In May, the Red Sox re-signed Drew, paying him a pro-rated salary of that initial qualifying offer. Now, he'll head to New York, either to back up Derek Jeter on his farewell tour or to play a new position for the first time in his major league career.
