State Considering A Third Cape Cod Bridge
SAGAMORE (CBS) -- Would a third bridge across the Cape Cod Canal help alleviate traffic?
The Boston Globe reports that state transportation officials are studying a proposal to add another bridge that would be built at no cost to taxpayers.
One option being considered is adding a three-lane span next to the Sagamore Bridge.
The Globe says a new bridge would be limited to Cape-bound traffic only. It would also utilize open-road tolling so drivers wouldn't have to slow down.
The proposal calls for the Sagamore to then become a one-way, three-lane bridge for people leaving the Cape, with no toll.
"It depends a lot on if we find somebody who wants to finance it," Baker, though he said he's seen a surprising level of support for it on the Cape.
For those looking for a free ride, the Bourne Bridge is just 4.5 miles away.
The Globe says the state is intrigued by the idea of having private investors pay for the construction of the bridge in return for a cut of the toll money.
