Report: Bruins Worked On Trade With Vancouver, Likely For Alex Edler
BOSTON (CBS) -- Bruins president Cam Neely disclosed on Felger & Massarotti on Thursday that the team "had a deal in principle" with an unnamed team for an unnamed player that was not executed prior to the trade deadline.
The Boston Globe's Fluto Shinzawa did the requisite digging and found that the team in question was the Vancouver Canucks.
The Bruins likely target? Shinzawa said the player could not be confirmed, "but it's likely they were targeting smooth-moving left-shot defenseman Alex Edler."
Edler, a 27-year-old left-shot defenseman, has five goals and 11 assists for Vancouver this season. The Swede has a minus-27 rating for the struggling Canucks, and he has five years with a $5 million cap hit remaining on his contract.
"The 27-year-old Edler fits the profile of the type of player the Bruins wanted to assume some of Dennis Seidenberg's responsibilities: a left-shot defenseman who can play big minutes and move the puck. Edler could have been the left-side man on the No. 2 pairing," Shinzawa wrote.
However, the deal was dependent on the Canucks trading Ryan Kesler to Pittsburgh, a deal that never happened, leaving the Bruins in the cold on Edler.
The Bruins instead acquired Andrej Meszaros from the Flyers prior to the deadline.
