Remake Of Iconic Coca Cola Ad Blasts Soda Companies

WASHINGTON (CBS) -- A new take on an iconic Coca Cola commercial is aiming to highlight the dangers of soda.

The 44-year-old "Hilltop" ad - recently shown on the series finale of "Mad Men' - features a diverse group of singers who wish they could "buy the world a Coke."

In the remake released by a health advocacy group, singers with ailments such as Type 2 diabetes and hypertension counter that they'd "like to buy the world a drink that doesn't cause disease" and "teach the world about what sugar did to me."

"If not for drinking soda pop / It's just so sugary / My liver might not be enlarged, might have a few more teeth" the new jingle goes.

The Center For Science In The Public Interest, which is the group behind the campaign, says soda companies have spent billions to tell consumers that soda brings happiness.

"Well, we thought it would be interesting to see a fresh take on the Hilltop ad—where real people, suffering from real soda-related health problems—could tell their stories," the group said. "It's time to change the tune."
