Red Sox Prospect Michael Kopech Breaks Hand In Fight With Roommate

BOSTON (CBS) -- Michael Kopech's professional baseball career is not exactly going swimmingly.

Last year, the right-handed pitcher was slapped with a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a banned stimulant.

This year, Kopech will start the year sidelined with a broken hand, an injury he suffered in a fight with a roommate.

"It's disappointing, very disappointing," Red Sox GM Mike Hazen told reporters Tuesday, per the Boston Herald. "It was stupid. He's going to have to grow up with the things that have happened."

The 19-year-old Kopech was drafted 33rd overall in the first round of the 2014 draft, and the Red Sox paid him a $1.67 million signing bonus. In 24 professional games in 2014 and 2015 in rookie ball and single-A, Kopech owns a 4-6 record and 2.99 ERA while striking out 86 batters in 78.1 innings pitched.
