Red Sox Draft Pick Jason Groome Set To Make Pro Debut Next Week
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox' first pick in the 2016 MLB draft is expected to make his professional debut next week.
Left-handed pitcher Jason Groome, who Boston selected with the 12th overall pick in June, is scheduled to make his pro debut next Monday for Boston's Gulf Coast League affiliate. The 17-year-old reported to Fort Myers, Florida last month and has been in the Red Sox' throwing program since. He has thrown a few bullpen sessions as well, and if his session later this week goes well, the plan is for him to make his debut against the Gulf Coast League Rays on Monday.
Groome, who Boston signed to a $3.65 million contract on July 15, is one of three first-round picks who has not made their professional debut.
