BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox tapped into the local waters with their fourth-round pick in the MLB First Year Player draft, selecting Bryant University pitcher Kevin McAvoy with the 134th overall pick.
McAvoy, a right-handed who just completed his junior year at Bryant, has put up some impressive numbers for the Bulldogs. In 15 starts last season, he went 9-1 with a 2.62 ERA, 94 strikeouts and just 28 walks in 99.1 innings or work. In 44 games for Bryant (40 starts), McAvoy is 21-5 with a 3.11 ERA and has 192 punchouts in 254.2 innings pitched. He has also thrown six complete games.
The 20-year-old also pitched for Yarmouth in the Cape League last summer, striking out 28 batters and walking just seven over 31 innings.
McAvoy was a three-time State Champion at Westhill High School in Syracuse, N.Y. before heading to Bryant.
With their first pick of Day 2 of the draft (103rd overall) the Red Sox selected Jake Cosart, a converted pitcher from Seminole State. The 20-year-old Cosart is considered one of the top junior college prospects in this year's Draft.
