7 Dead After Pickup Truck And Trailer Hits Motorcycles In Randolph NH

RANDOLPH, N.H. (CBS) -- Seven motorcycle riders are dead after being hit by a pickup truck and trailer in a horrific crash in northern New Hampshire.

It happened Friday evening on Route 2 in Randolph, which is about three hours north of Boston. More details were revealed Saturday as State Police said a Dodge pickup truck with a trailer collided with a group of 10 motorcycles from the non-profit JarHeads MC, a club that includes Marines and their spouses.

"There was a pickup truck with a flatbed trailer heading west and he crossed the yellow line and tried to swerve back and his trailer jackknifed and wiped out [the] people on the motorcycles," said Jerry Hamanne, who owns The Inn at Bowman nearby.

Coos County Attorney John McCormick called it "a very complex accident scene."

"[It] was just complete chaos," Hamanne told WBZ-TV. "And the mangled bikes and the bodies just lying everywhere, screaming for help."

"One guy, his leg was cut and they were trying to put pressure to stop the bleed out. I ran and got a rope because a belt wasn't good enough to try it to make a tourniquet. They were trying everything until the ambulances got there," Hamanne said.

Seven people died. Three others were hurt. One of the three was rushed to Maine Medical Center on a rescue helicopter and the other two were taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Investigators said they will not release the names of the seven people killed until Sunday at the earliest, so they can notify all of the families involved. Two of the seven were from Massachusetts, Jarheads MC local chapter president Manny Ribeiro told WBZ-TV Saturday night.

The truck driver was identified Saturday as 23-year-old Volodymyr Zhukovskyy of West Springfield, Massachusetts. He was reportedly not hurt, even though his truck caught fire after the collision. He was working for Westfield Transportation. The company's owner had yet to speak to the driver. He told The Boston Globe Zhukovskyy "doesn't answer the phone calls."

There have been no arrests at this point in the investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board has a team in Randolph looking into what happened and why.

At a news conference Saturday afternoon, authorities asked that anyone who has video, photos or information about the crash or vehicles to call them.

"This is really described by our investigators as one of the worst investigations they have ever completed. I had my most senior investigators out last night and they had never seen the tragedy they had saw last night," New Hampshire State Police Col. Chris Wagner told reporters.

"This is an unfolding investigation. We have more questions than answers at this moment," said Deputy Attorney General Jane Young.
