Providence Fire Captain In Critical Condition After Blaze

PROVIDENCE, RI (CBS) – A Providence, Rhode Island fire captain is in critical condition after a fire on Eaton Street Thursday afternoon, WPRI reports.

The fire started at a triple decker and strong winds quickly spread the flames to buildings on both sides.

The Providence Firefighters Union President tells WPRI Captain Joseph Fontaine was taken to Roger Williams Medical Center and was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital.

Fontaine suffered a twisted ankle at the fire but when he was transported to the hospital, his blood pressure dropped. He is in his late 50s and has been with the department for 31 years. He is also a military veteran.

Providence College says 19 students were displaced in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
