Police: Suspect Arrested For Stealing From Subway Tip Jar

NEW BEDFORD (AP) — Police say a New Bedford man is in custody after he was accused of stealing money from a tip jar at a southeastern Massachusetts Subway restaurant.

Authorities say Edward Silva entered the restaurant Tuesday night in New Bedford demanding employees give him $100. When employees backed away, police say Silva reached into the tip jar and took an undetermined amount of money.

Police responded to a disturbance and say he appeared irate when he demanded the money. They say they watched him reach over the counter at the register.

The 50-year-old Silva was arrested and charged with unarmed robbery.

No employees were injured.

It was not known Thursday if Silva is represented by a lawyer.
