Police: No Injuries After Gunman Fires Into Fall River House

FALL RIVER (CBS) -- Police in Fall River are saying it's fortunate no one was hurt after a fight at a Halloween party led to a shooting with an assault rifle.

Multiple gunshots were reported after 3 a.m. at 120 Melville Street, where police found a shattered car window and multiple bullet holes at the front entrance of the home. Officers searched for possible victims, but said no one was found injured.

After an investigation, police went to 294 Grove Street in Fall River, where officers saw the barrel of a rifle extending out a third-floor window. Police then arrested 20-year-old Aquiles Serpa, and said they also located an assault rifle and marijuana.

Serpa is facing seven counts of assault to murder, armed, among other charges.

"We are quite pleased that there was no loss of life last night," Fall River police chief Daniel S. Racine said. "This gunman fired wildly into a house full of people, it is amazing there is not multiple fatalities."

Police say the incident appeared to stem from a Halloween party at a restaurant earlier in the evening, where several men, including Serpa, showed up uninvited and a physical altercation ensued.
