Police: Don't Chase Bears In The Woods Drunk With A Dull Hatchet

NORTH ADAMS (CBS) --  In case you weren't aware already, police are reminding residents "to NOT chase bears through the woods with a dull hatchet, drunk."

"Yes, that really did happen tonight," North Adams police said in a Facebook post Monday night.

Police said they took the unidentified hatchet man into protective custody because he was incapacitated from alcohol, and have no idea what he planned to do if he caught up with the bear.

Massachusetts wildlife officials estimate there are up to 4,500 black bears roaming statewide, mostly in western counties. Police said anyone who spots one should call authorities and not take matters into their own hands.

"We certainly don't need anyone going all Davy Crockett chasing it through the woods drunk with a dull hatchet," police said. "It's just a bad idea and not going to end well."
