Massive Fire Destroys Multiple Homes On Plum Island
NEWBURYPORT (CBS) -- A massive fire burned through several houses on Plum Island Saturday.
At least three homes and multiple cars on 20th street were damaged by the 5-alarm fire.
The fire began shortly before 1p.m. on the first floor of a home on the street. That home is now a total loss.
"It's very upsetting to see something like that happen, and your whole house go up in flames pretty much," said homeowner Kenny Dorr.
"It's very surreal right now, it hasn't set in that tonight I will not go back to my house," he said.
Fire officials say no one was inside the home when the fire started and no one was injured.
Plum Island resident Greg Story told WBZ NewsRadio that the situation was made more difficult by how close all the houses were to one another.
"The real problem over here is that everything is just on top of each other," Story said. "Cars parked really close to the houses, there's only about 20 feet in between the houses in some cases over here."
One firefighter was treated for a heat-related condition but is expected to be OK.
Crews are expected to work through the night to extinguish hot spots left from the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
