Former Phillips Exeter Academy Employee Charged With Sexual Assault In NH

EXETER, N.H. (CBS) -- A former Phillips Exeter Academy employee is accused of sexually assaulting a prospective student at the New Hampshire school.

Arthur Peekel, 74, of Palatine, Illinois, turned himself Friday to Exeter police, according to a news statement released Friday afternoon. He has been charged with two class A misdemeanor counts of sexual assault.

Peekel was released on $25,000 bail and had to surrender his passport, sign an extradition waiver and have no contact with kids.

He is slated to be arraigned July 5 in a Brentwood court.

Police say Peekel committed "multiple acts of sexual assault" at the school sometime between November and December 1973.

The school turned over multiple complaints of alleged misconduct to investigators on April 4, and police have received additional complaints since then, according to the statement.

Investigators say they have closed many of the cases, including unfounded rumors and alleged victims deciding not to come forward. The alleged incidents happened from the 1960s-to-2014, with some of them not involving employees of the school, police say.

Some cases remain open, but police did not specify how many in the statement.
