Suspect, Victim In Cambridge Body Parts Mystery Identified
CAMBRIDGE (CBS/AP) - The victim and suspect in a gruesome discovery in Cambridge over the weekend were identified Monday.
Carlos Colina, 32, pleaded not guilty to assault and battery and improper disposal of human remains at his arraignment in Cambridge District Court.
He was ordered held on $1 million bail.
In the police report made available to the media Monday, officers say Colina is seen on surveillance video carrying a duffel bag out of his 6th Street apartment and dropping it off in front of the Biogen building across the street just after 4 a.m. Saturday.
Investigators also claim his key card swipes at his apartment building match the same time as the video.
Human remains, including a torso and limbs, were found in the discarded duffel bag.
Police say when they later went into Colina's apartment, they smelled a strong odor of bleach and found a head in a recycling bin.
A saw, rope and cleaning supplies were also found in the apartment, according to authorities.
The victim was identified Monday as Jonathan Camilien.
"He maintains his innocence," Colina's attorney John Cunha told reporters outside court.
"This is obviously a very sad situation. I can't image a worse loss for any family than the loss of a loved one. Our hearts go out to the deceased."
Neighbors told police they saw Colina walk into his apartment late Friday night with a man that matches Camilien's description.
They claimed they heard the men arguing and hours later saw Colina walk out by himself.
Investigators have not said anything yet about how the two men knew each other.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Camilien's death is considered a homicide. There is no word yet on a motive.
Colina is not facing murder charges at this point in the investigation.
