Peabody Man Held Without Bail, Charged With Killing Girlfriend

PEABODY, Mass. (CBS/AP) — A Peabody man has agreed to be held without bail on charges stemming from allegations that he killed his girlfriend then turned himself into police.

Franklin Castano was arraigned Friday on charges of murder and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.

Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokeswoman for the Essex District Attorney's office, says plea of not guilty was entered on Castano's behalf at Peabody District Court.

Authorities say the Castano showed up at the Lynn police station on Thursday morning and led police to his apartment where his 23-year-old girlfriend, Solangie Paulino, was found dead.

Investigators said Castano first confessed the killing to friends, who urged him to surrender to police.

The 43-year-old Castano is scheduled to appear in court on March 25 for a probable cause hearing.

His attorney did not immediately return a call for comment Friday.
