Another update: Matt Corral is NOT joining Patriots practice squad

Matthew Judon gives his honest assessment of the 0-2 New England Patriots

FOXBORO -- Matt Corral's time with the Patriots continues to be shrouded in mystery.

One day after reportedly joining the team's practice squad -- which happened one day after Corral was released by New England -- it's now being reported that the quarterback is NOT signing with the Patriots' practice squad after all. That comes via The Boston Herald's Doug Kyed, who updated the situation Wednesday morning.

The NFL transaction wire on Tuesday had Corral signing with the New England practice squad, but something obviously changed in the last few hours.

It has been an interesting three weeks for Corral, whom the Patriots claimed off waivers back on Aug. 31. Since he was claimed off the Panthers' practice squad, Corral was on New England's 53-man roster and became the team's No. 2 quarterback in place of Bailey Zappe, who was waived by the team and brought back on the practice squad.

But Zappe was put back on New England's active roster on Sept. 9 ahead of Week 1, and Corral was put on the exempt/left team list after reportedly leaving the team after three practices without any notice. Head coach Bill Belichick didn't go into much detail about Corral's departure ahead of New England's opener, saying only that it was a "personal issue" for the quarterback.

The Patriots released Corral outright on Monday, before evidently signing him to the practice squad on Tuesday. But that is no longer the case, according to Kyed.

Perhaps another team is looking to sign the 24-year-old to their active roster. Or maybe Corral is still working out the personal issue that had him leaving the Patriots a few weeks back. We'll see if a little more clarity on the situation comes out in the near future.

Corral was a third-round pick by the Panthers in 2022 after an impressive four-year career at Ole Miss. He spent his rookie season on injured reserve with a foot injury.
