Cancer Survivors, Patients Treated To Day Of Pampering By Patriots
BOSTON (CBS) - It was a day to be pampered, for breast cancer survivors and women still in treatment, courtesy of the New England Patriots. And since this is breast cancer awareness month, the timing couldn't be better.
This is the kind of treatment these women deserve. "This is the first time getting a spa treatment since I was diagnosed last December," says Milly Arbaje-Thomas, one of the 10 women invited to be part of Monday's fun.
Cancer is a harsh companion to say the least and treatment takes a toll, but for these women all that was on hold as they got to kick back and enjoy. "It's very good, and it's a one time blessing for us especially for us as cancer survivors," says Vedalyn Chambers from Framingham.
It was all organized by the Patriots Charitable Foundation. "I think it's fantastic. It's really so generous, and it's sort of just what the doctor ordered," says Meadow Hilley, another survivor as she got her nails done.
There were massages at Green Tangerine and manicures at Lee's Nails, both in Foxboro, as well as nutrition and fitness advice at Gillette Stadium. "I have three young kids and between treatment and kids, I spend most of my time dealing with that and it's nice to have a day to be pampered and do stuff for myself," says Jessica Heefner.
Players and coaches' wives spent time getting to know their guests. "I'm inspired. I'm motivated to do more. Each of their stories are very unique and heartwarming," says Laura McDaniels, who is married to Pats coach Josh McDaniels.
Monday was a sign of progress. "I hadn't been able to do my nails. They were very weak with the chemotherapy, and I haven't been able to do a massage because it hurt because I had the breast removal. So for me, this is a real treat today," says Milly.
"Now I'm going to be pretty going back home, and it's going to give me courage to continue," adds Vedalyn.
The 10 women hosted were surprised by Patriots players who hand delivered invitations to them several days ago.
