Patrick Chung, Former Patriots Safety, Charged With Assaulting Woman

QUINCY (CBS) -- Former Patriots safety Patrick Chung was released on $10,000 bail Tuesday after the 34-year-old was charged with assaulting a woman outside a Milton home.

Chung was arrested following a Monday incident. He was charged with domestic assault and battery and vandalizing property.

He was arraigned Tuesday in Quincy District Court. Chung was released on $10,000 personal surety, meaning he would have to pay if he violates the terms of a restraining order that was put in place before the arraignment. He is next scheduled to appear in court on January 7.

According to a police report from the incident, Chung allegedly pushed a woman, causing her to fall to the ground. Chung also allegedly hit the woman in the face with an open hand.

He also is accused of taking the woman's cell phone and throwing it, causing the screen to shatter.

Paramedics checked the victim on scene, but she did not require treatment.

Sandy Pesiridis, a defense attorney for Chung, called him an "upstanding member of the community" and said he looks forward to clearing his name.

"He looks forward to being able to set the record straight with respect to what actually occurred. He's the victim, not the aggressor of this matter," the attorney said. "My client is a gentleman, and in no way would ever harm a woman. That as much I am sure about."

Chung retired from football in 2021, ending a 12-year career that included two stints in New England. The Patriots drafted him 34th overall in 2009 out of Oregon, giving the team a hard-hitting safety in the secondary. Chung played 10 seasons with the Patriots over his two stints with the team, coming down with 11 interceptions while making 778 combined tackles over his career.

He won three Super Bowls during his time in New England, and was named to the franchise's 2010s All-Decade Team.

Chung signed a two-year extension with the Patriots ahead of the 2020 season, but opted out of the campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He announced his retirement in March of 2021.

Chung was charged with cocaine possession in New Hampshire in 2019, but those charges were resolved after Chung and the state of New Hampshire reached an agreement.
