Patrice Bergeron Named To Team Canada Hockey Roster For Sochi Olympics
BOSTON (CBS) -- Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron will be representing Canada in the Olympics next month.
The 28-year-old Bergeron will be participating in his second Olympic tournament for Canada, as he won gold in Vancouver in 2010.
Bergeron was announced as a member of the team on Tuesday morning.
Bruins wingers Milan Lucic and Brad Marchand did not make the team after being invited to Team Canada's camp in the summer.
Bergeron was limited in his ice time in 2010, and he suffered a groin injury in the tournament which cost him two regular-season games upon his return to the Bruins in March 2010. In the 2010 Olympics, Bergeron had no goals and one assist in seven games as well as a minus-2 rating, but he was used almost exclusively as a face-off man when the injury limited his play.
Bergeron won gold medals for Canada in the World Junior Championships in 2004 and 2005.
Bergeron discussed the prospect of making Team Canada in his diary for ESPN.com on Monday.
"Obviously I'll be really excited if I make it," Bergeron said. "It is a goal of mine, I can't lie about that."
Bergeron also said, "It's a huge honor to represent your country especially on the Olympic stage, which is the biggest stage."
Bergeron is the fifth Bruin to be named to an Olympic team this year, joining Tuukka Rask (Finland), David Krejci (Czech Republic), Zdeno Chara (Slovakia), Loui Eriksson (Sweden). Bruins head coach Claude Julien will be an assistant coach for Team Canada, and B's GM Peter Chiarelli helped assemble the team.
