Vietnam Veteran Killed In Revere Apartment Building Fire
REVERE (CBS) – One man was killed in a three-alarm fire that ripped through a 4-story multi-family home on Campbell Avenue in Revere around 9 p.m. on Saturday.
The blaze in the eight-unit apartment building took firefighters several hours to bring under control, Revere fire officials said.
The 64-year-old victim, a Vietnam War veteran, was found in his third-floor apartment. Officials were trying to confirm his identity, but neighbors knew him as George.
All other residents of the apartment building were able to get out but two were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Red Cross is helping more than 35 people who have been displaced by the fire and are being sheltered at a nearby hotel.
At one point firefighters were pulled out of the building because of a partial roof collapse, fire officials said.
A Revere police officer, three Revere firefighters and a Massport firefighter were taken to the hospital with injuries.
Two of the Revere firefighters were being held over night for treatment of chest pains. The other first responders were treated and released.
Fire officials said the building is a total loss. The Suffolk District Attorney's Office said there was no preliminary evidence to suggest the fire was intentionally set.
The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation by Revere police, Revere fire, the state Fire Marshal's office, and state police. However, they said the blaze started in the third floor and quickly spread.
Workers on Sunday boarded up the home.
