One Killed, Two Hurt In Fiery Two-Car Attleboro Crash

ATTLEBORO (CBS) – One person was killed and two others were injured in a fiery car crash in Attleboro Saturday night.

Witnesses told police a white 1996 Mitsubishi convertible rear-ended a gray 2012 Toyota Highlander stopped at a red light and burst into flames about 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Washington Street and Mendon Road.

Before first responders arrived, the fire was extinguished by passers-by who used extinguishers from a gas station nearby, police said. One of the passers by, Tony Scott, described the effort to save a victim, whom he said died.

"You could see him gasping for air," Scott told WBZ-TV.

The driver of the convertible, identified only as a 37-year-old man, was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His passenger, a 40-year-old man, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and was undergoing treatment for serious injuries.

The 39-year-old woman who was driving the Highlander was taken to Pawtucket Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries that are not believed to be serious, police said.

Attleboro police said Pawtucket, R.I., police are investigating reports from witnesses that the Mitsubishi was involved in a hit-and-run accident a short distance away in Pawtucket just moments before the fatal crash.
