NH Man Dies In Cell After Arrest By Mass. Police

NEWBURY (AP) — Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating after a New Hampshire man arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs died while in state police custody.

Roger Gasangwa, of Dover, New Hampshire, was arrested Saturday night after he crashed his car on Interstate 495 in Amesbury.

Police say the 34-year-old Gasangwa was checked by medical personnel at the scene and did not have any visible injuries. He was also searched for contraband and none was found.

He was placed in a cell at Newbury State Police Barracks and at a 2 a.m. check Sunday it was discovered he was not breathing.

He was taken to a Boston hospital and pronounced dead.

Police are testing a brown powder and rolled-up piece of paper found in Gasangwa's cell.

An autopsy is scheduled.
