NH Girl Credited With Saving Grandfather's Life After Tree Fell On Him
BOSTON (CBS) – Six-year-old Jacey Montague is full of energy, loves the woods and adores her grandfather.
"I love him about as big as this town," said Montague.
And now the first-grader is being credited with saving his life after a tree fell on top of him.
Montague and her grandfather were on a walk in the woods near their Alton, New Hampshire home, when they came across a tree that was upright but looked weak.
For whatever reason, her grandfather, long-time Alton post office clerk Tom Montague, began to shake the tree.
The tree would break his neck in two places and crush his pelvis when it toppled over.
He was unconscious.
Jacey, who was not hurt, ran home and calmly called 911.
"She is just amazing," said her mom Colleen Teeter. "She knew what to do and she didn't hesitate, she didn't panic and she's my hero."
Police say Jacey will be awarded with a plaque for her quick-thinking.
"He would not have lasted long out there without anybody contacting help," said Alton Police Chief Ryan Heath. "That young girl saved his life."
Jacey knew what to do thanks to the man she saved. It was her grandfather who taught her how to use a phone. Her parents taught her how to call 911 if in danger.
"And we told her that she'd probably never need it," said Teeter.
For now, her grandfather is on a ventilator with a third surgery scheduled later this week.
