New Hampshire Man Charged With Voter Suppression
CONCORD, N.H. (CBS) – A New Hampshire man was arrested for allegedly trying to stop residents from voting during a state presentative election.
New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph Foster said Carl Gibson, 28, of Concord, turned himself into police Thursday afternoon after a warrant was issued on voter suppression charges.
Police said Gibson knowingly tried to stop voters from casting ballots in Tuesday's special election for Rockingham District 32 state representative.
District 32 includes the towns of Candia, Deerfield, Northwood and Nottingham.
Gibson allegedly distributed a fake press release to news outlets saying that candidate Yvonne Dean-Bailey was dropping out of the race.
By doing so, police said Gibson gave voters the impression that the election was uncontested.
Voter suppression is a Class B felony. Gibson was also charged distributing a false document, a Class A misdemeanor.
Gibson is scheduled to be arraigned on June 22 in 6th Circuit Court in Concord, N.H.
