New Bedford Search Ends After Coast Guard Finds No Evidence Boy Was Missing
NEW BEDFORD (CBS) – A search for a missing swimmer in waters off New Bedford has been called due to lack of evidence anyone was missing.
Saturday evening at around 6:00 a woman told New Bedford Police she had seen a young boy jump off the New Bedford pier near Fort Taber, surface and then go back under without resurfacing, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
A 47-foot boat from the Meneshma Coast Guard Station on Martha's Vineyard and a helicopter from the Cape Cod Air Station and the Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead began searching the area.
Coast Guard officials said the search was called off last night after they determined there was no evidence of anyone in the water and there were no reports of a missing child.
"We always appreciate the public's vigilance - and the reporting source did exactly the right thing by contacting us," said Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Michael Caianello. "But with no reports of any missing people or additional sightings on the area, in this case, we believe it was a false alarm," he said.
