New Bedford Police Officer Shot While Executing A Search Warrant

NEW BEDFORD (CBS) - A New Bedford police officer was released from the hospital Saturday, a day after he was shot while executing a search warrant.

Police say a gunman fired several shots from inside an apartment on Davis Street as officers attempted to break through a barricaded door around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe reports

One officer, a member of the drug unit, was hit by the gunfire.

He was rushed to St. Luke's and then to Rhode Island Hospital.  His name has not been released.

"The round passed just above the bullet proof vest that he was wearing and lodged itself in his chest cavity, so he was a hair away from being gravely hurt," New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell told WBZ-TV.

A short standoff followed the shooting before officers were able to convince the five people inside the apartment to surrender.

Nathan Manuel-Jackson, 20, who lives in the apartment, was charged with armed assault with intent to murder, along with several firearms violations.

Thomas Scott, 34, of Mattapan was charged with accessory after the fact and firearms violations.

Police said the three other people were served with grand jury subpoenas and may face charges.

"It's times like these that cause mayors concern and cause neighbors concern but we're going to double our efforts to make sure that there aren't any shootings in New Bedford at all," Mayor Mitchell said.
