National School Scrabble Championship Underway In Providence, RI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A war of words is raging in Rhode Island this weekend, and the winner will walk away with $10,000.

More than 100 Scrabble players from grade four through eight are in Providence for the National School Scrabble Championship.

Contestants play in teams of two, with each facing seven teams from the United States and Canada.

Games began Saturday and continue through Sunday, when the two top teams are scheduled to square off in front of a 64-square foot Scrabble board.

The winning team will bag a $10,000 grand prize.

Karen Davis, a vice president for toy-maker Hasbro Inc., says the contest enables young students "to showcase their extraordinary vocabulary skills and team work" on a national stage.
