Former Wednesday's Child Gets Forever Home On National Adoption Day
BROCKTON (CBS) -- On this National Adoption Day, it's the happiest of days for each of the 125 children who found forever families--and you may remember one of those children, because we met him on Wednesday's Child.
Our own Jack Williams introduced us to Mikey last year, and today is the day we all hoped for.
It was a day for marching bands, balloons, and lots of applause and celebration. And for 5-year-old Mikey, it was a day of love from his new parents, Denise and Perry Rice.
"This is fantastic," Denise says.
"Mike's a great kid. He's come a long way," adds Perry.
They appeared in a Brockton court today, the paper work was signed and the adoption became final.
When we first met Mikey through Wednesday's Child, Jack Williams made a personal appeal, saying "I know we're searching for a miracle, but this little boy, who was given up at birth, needs to be loved."
There's no question he is. Denise was hooked as soon as she looked into Mikey's eyes.
"There's an immediate connection with the eyes," she says.
Mikey was adopted with the help of the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange, which is also the partner to Wednesday's Child.
"I think what showing kids on Wednesday's Child like Mikey does, is educate the public about who these children are," she says.
"It's a very special day. These families stand up to make a commitment to children. They fall in love with these kids," says Linda Spears, the Commissioner of the Mass. Dept. of Children and Families.
"It's just a good thing that we have the opportunity to have another child in the house," says Perry Rice.
Mikey's new big brother Jake, who is also adopted, even got in on the process by asking if he could help, and had a special message for his new little brother.
"You're home," he said.
