Police: Nashua Woman Set Up GoFundMe For Family's Deceased Daughter, Took The Money

NASHUA, NH (CBS) -- Police arrested a woman they say set up a fundraising page for a family after their daughter died and pocketed the money for herself.

Sheila Fauteux still mourns the loss of her beloved daughter Tabatha who died last November at the age of 26.

A few months later Tabatha's friend Krystal Gentley of Nashua offered to set up a GoFundMe page to help the family.

Though all proceeds were supposed to go to the family, they never received the money. When the family later contacted GoFundMe.com about receiving the donations, they were told the account had been closed and the money withdrawn.

Gentley, 26, was arrested Friday for theft by deception.

Sheila Fauteux is angry and hurt.

"You can't go any lower in life I think than to do something like that, that was the lowest," she said.

"It just made it harder, it made things go deeper than deep, they were already at their saddest point but to do what she did was even deeper."

Tabatha's parents feel betrayed. Her father says it's made the loss of Tabatha even tougher to bear.

"I couldn't believe how pathetic she would be to do something like that," Guy Fauteux said.

"I couldn't believe it. Going through what we went through and then to have to even think of something like that and then to have to deal with something like that."

Police say Gentley is charged with a felony that could bring 15 years in prison. She's free on $5,000 bail and is due back in court next month.
