Motorcycle, Tractor-Trailer Involved In Deadly Crash In Medford
MEDFORD (CBS) -- A motorcyclist was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer in Medford Friday morning. It happened just off Mystic Valley Parkway around 8:00 a.m.
Massachusetts State Police confirmed around 12:15 p.m. that the crash killed a 23-year-old man from Chelsesa.
The Wegmans delivery truck was stopped in what appeared to be a right-hand turn and was surrounded by caution tape. The motorcycle was seen wedged underneath the truck near the tires.
"Pretty tragic to see the motorcyclist stuck in there," said Rick Caravielli, who saw the crash.
He said this area always has traffic.
The victim was operating a 2007 Yamaha YZF R1 motorcycle and traveling in the breakdown lane to pass traffic, police said. The tractor-trailer was making a legal right turn into the parking lot of the Meadow Glen Mall when the collision occurred, according to authorities.
The motorcyclist was taken to a Boston hospital, where he died.
Medford and Massachusetts State Police responded to the scene. A hazmat team was also called because the tractor-trailer was leaking fuel, and Route 16 was closed for about three hours.
The truck driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police.
