Boston Firefighters Rescue Dog From Drain Pipe In Millennium Park

WEST ROXBURY (CBS) – Boston firefighters worked for more than two hours to free a dog that was trapped in a drain pipe at Millennium Park in West Roxbury. It happened Wednesday afternoon around 2 p.m.

Firefighters used a camera to determine where the dog named Hubie was located. "They used a camera and some other equipment and made holes in the pipe and could track the dog," said Brian Alkins of Boston Fire. "We used a backhoe from National Grid to dig past the dog."

Multiple agencies helped out. Finally, with Boston Drain on one end, firefighters were able to scoop Hubie out, some two and a half hours later.

"He's a little overweight like some of us," a Boston Drain worker said. "It's a 16 inch pipe, so as he's moving forward, he can't move back, so we just kind of hit him in the backside and the fire guys were able to pull him up out of the manhole."

It was a huge relief for Hubie's walker. His owners were just delighted to take him home.

"Oh my gosh I just can't believe the fire department and the police department and everybody that helped out," the dog's owner said. "This is one lucky dog."

"Everybody came together in the city for a common cause and it came out positive," Alkins said. "The dog was in great shape. He was happy to be out and happy to see his owners."

Bars on the end of the pipe meet industry standards, but there are already plans in place to add more so no other pets or kids follow Hubie's lead.
